The Ministry Continues in the “Amazonas”

In our church library is the book, The Port of Two Brothers, the fascinating account of the missionary careers of brothers Paul and John Schlener and their wives, Jessie and Fran, who served on the edge of the Amazon jungle for 40 years, starting in 1951.  It includes hair-raising tales of encounters with Anacondas, piranhas and terantulas, and especially their challenging ministry to the Ticuna Indians, who had never heard of the Savior.

Long since retired to Washington State, and now in their eighties, they tell us in a recent letter that they have received the most gratifying news--word of “fruit” from their life’s work.  As they tell it, “The best news we’ve received for a long, long time came in an email . . . a four-page testimony from a young Ticuna Indian [Rober Guerreiro] who was led to a saving knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ by his grandfather, Sebastiao, who became a Christian during our ministry there.”  He’s graduating from seminary in Curitiba, Brazil and feels God calling him and his wife to return to minister to the Ticuna people where he was raised, “and to all the Indian tribes he can possibly reach in Amazonas [as the natives call it].  Just think of this!

While this young man is fluent in Portuguese and English, he’ll be teaching and preaching IN HIS OWN TICUNA LANGUAGE.  We are more thankful than we can express for your prayers for us, and for Rober Guerreiro.  How great it is to know that God’s blessing and ministry continues.”  We can celebrate with the Schleners that God’s Word never returns void.

Your contributions in the offering plate here at FBCW over the years have helped make it possible for our missionaries to plant seeds that multiply exponentially!
